When we access the facebook site through a browser, we are automatically redirected to the app store when we try to read the messages. However, messages are normally displayed when we log in in 'desktop mode' (which makes the rest of the site a little ugly). Ideally, you should be redirected to the desktop version just by clicking on the messages (although later, when you leave them, you have to manually go back to 'mobile mode').
