A script can inspect the href of links in a page and add a target="_blank" attribute if the file extension is recognized as a typical image file extension.
Obviously different URLs can be more or less difficult to read, and scripts in the page may bypass the default behavior of following the target attribute. So the success of the above method may vary from site to site. Is there a particular site where you want this?
